Five Notable Features of the 2017 Hyundai Elantra

Hyundai South Africa is set to release the much-anticipated new Elantra model in June of this year. This compact family vehicle is expected to come with a range of exciting improvements, including the introduction of a 1.6-liter turbo-petrol model. The Elantra has long been known as Hyundai's most famous sedan in South Africa, and it continues to hold its own against competitors such as the Kia Cerato, Honda Civic, and Corolla.

One of the standout improvements of the new Elantra is its reformed aerodynamics. The car features front wheel air curtains, which help to reduce turbulence and wind resistance by redirecting airflow around the wheels. The increased dimensions of the 6th generation Elantra also contribute to its improved aerodynamics, with a 20mm increase in length, 25mm increase in width, and 5mm increase in height. The exterior of the car is sleek and stylish, with slim brushed back headlights and LED daytime-running lights. It boasts an impressive 0.27 drag coefficient, thanks to its strategically placed underbody covers, longer boot lid, and lower bumper spoiler. Alloy rims will be available in 16 or 17 inches for local variants.

Moving to the interior, the new Elantra offers enhanced spaciousness and a driver-focused design. The increased dimensions of the car provide additional shoulder room for both front and rear passengers, as well as extra headroom and rear legroom. The interior features metallic-painted trims and a dashboard, along with air vent enclosures with an alloy-look. The center stack is angled 7 degrees towards the driver for easier access to controls. High-end models may come with high-gloss piano black trims and a sliding armrest at the center front. The local models will include a touchscreen infotainment system with USB and auxiliary outlets, MP3 and Bluetooth capabilities, and audio streaming. Other features such as leather furnishings, dual-zone climate control with an automatic windscreen defogger, and a multi-function steering wheel will be available in flagship models.

Five Notable Features of the 2017 Hyundai Elantra 1

In terms of refinement and durability, the new Elantra has significantly improved contortion-rigidity. This is achieved through the use of aerospace-derived structural fastenings and high-intensity steel, resulting in reduced noise, vibration, and harshness levels. The suspension of the new Elantra has also been improved to provide a more refined driving experience. The rear suspension now boasts vertical and longer dampers and repositioned coil springs, while the front suspension features a new sub-frame designed to optimize NVH properties.

Safety is also a key focus of the new Elantra. Although the specific safety features for the South African market are yet to be confirmed, it is expected that local models will come with front, curtain, and side airbags, Hill Start Assist, electronic brake-force distribution, traction control, electronic stability control, vehicle stability management, brake assist, and ABS brakes.

The new Elantra will be available in a range of petrol engine variants, including a 2.0-liter Nu MPi engine, a 1.6T GDI turbo-petrol engine, and a Sport model with a Veloster Turbo engine. The entry-level Elantras will have a 96 kW output and 157 Nm of torque. The 2.0-liter engine will produce 115 kW and 196 Nm of torque, while the 1.6-liter turbo engine will deliver 130 kW and 265 Nm of torque. Both engine options will be available with manual or automatic 6-speed transmissions, and the 1.6-liter turbo engine may be offered with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. The Sport model will feature a 1.6-liter, 4-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine with direct injection, producing 150 kW and 265 Nm of torque. It will come with a paddle-shift, dual-clutch transmission, and sporty features such as 18-inch alloy rims, a black-framed grille, LED headlights, and a multi-link rear suspension.

In conclusion, the new Hyundai Elantra is set to impress the South African market with its exciting improvements. From its reformed aerodynamics to its enhanced interior and improved refinement, the Elantra is a well-built and refined vehicle. With a range of features, safety options, and engine variants to choose from, there is something to suit every driver's needs. Whether it's the efficient and stylish standard model or the sporty and powerful Sport model, the new Elantra is sure to make a statement on the road.
